Cooking Class

  • Canterbury refugee resettlement and resource center 39 Nursery Road Christchurch, Canterbury, 8011 New Zealand (map)

Food has the power to build cultural connections; It is the language to communicate with other people; it does not matter where you are from as long as you speak food. Cooking classes were both fun and educational. Participants learn some essential skills and cooking know-how to enhance their cooking experience.

It is very important to use the values of cooking to counter the often negative discourse surrounding refugees and migrants and change the perceptions of those who leave their homes to start a new life elsewhere. We are fortunate to be able to work with them to ensure that they are welcomed by their new community.

Cooking teaches critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. It also strengthens the relationships between children and parents and allows them to appreciate real food. It is also an opportunity to teach nutrition education and essential life skills.
